Tapes, like vinyl, are analog, which means while you might not get that crackling sound you love so much about old vintage vinyls, you will get a uniquely analog sound that strikes up the warm and fuzzies. Plus, it actually will sound better than what you get from the compressed quality of streaming, so if you or your fans are audio heads in any way (or if you just value sound quality) this makes it a really good option.

The music business in 2019 has obviously changed immensely from what it was in 1919, but one thing about music hasn’t really changed all that much: It’s still inspirational, motivational, and capable of producing emotional power and beauty. A great example of this is in Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F Major, right at the beginning of the second movement (which starts at 7:41 in the below video). In the second measure, the second violin and viola continue their eighth-note pattern grouped in threes, while the first violin plays descending quarter notes, essentially groups of two eighth notes.

Jake’s tone, phrasing, and ability to build tension and land it so elegantly took this track much farther than I thought it would go. His opening phrase at 0:43, laid way back on the end of the beat and contrasting beautifully against the frantically paced drums, is such an incredible statement. And Jake’s solo gave me so many additional ideas, like using some additional harmony to frame what he was playing and chopping up some of his phrases to set up the new section — directions I wouldn’t have pursued had I not reached out to him to collaborate.

Recently someone posted this performance of the chaconne from J.S. Bach’s Violin Partita No.2 in D minor, BWV 1004 on an 11-string guitar by Moran Wasser.

55 years ago today, the Rolling Stones released their “5×5” EP, the recording session in which they serendipitously met their blues idol, Muddy Waters.

Write down exactly what you hope to accomplish during a session and include all the relevant steps or sub-goals. For example, if your main goal is to record “Song A,” get specific about what you need to do in order to get it all done in the most manageable way. From laying down a scratch track in the demo phase to knowing when in the production process to add ornamental sound design elements, chart out the steps so you don’t end up wasting valuable time. This saves you time because it forces you to plan and act before recording, not reactively and inefficiently throughout the process.

These odd bars are there to facilitate the speed-up (that’s accelerando for you lasagna lovers), like how she says “I’m picking it up.” The “bridge” here could be considered a modified chorus. I’m calling it a bridge, though, because of the material it mixes in from all of the sections. This mash-up really is its own thing here, even though it introduces no new material.
